Colloquium Making Behavioural Science Work

Thursday 15 May 2025, 4 pm - 5 pm
From Insight to Impact

Curious how behavioural science helps tackle real-world challenges? At the Knowledge Centre Psychology and Economic Behaviour, we focus on turning academic research into practical solutions. Our mission: to bridge the gap between science and society. In this talk, I’ll take you behind the scenes of our centre—how we began, how we’re structured, and most importantly, how we collaborate with governments and societal organisations to create real impact. You’ll get a glimpse into our work on financial wellbeing and social connectedness, featuring joint projects with the Dutch Tax Administration, the Benefits Office, and Money Wise. Along the way, I’ll share what we’ve learned about navigating the opportunities - and challenges - of working with external partners inside and outside academia. Curious how behavioural science can help shape better policy and behavioural interventions? Let’s discuss how we can make behavioural insights work—there will be plenty of room for discussion and exchange.

About the speaker

Wilco van Dijk is professor 'Economic Psychology and its applications' and chair of the unit Social, Economic and Organisational Psychology at Leiden University.  In his research he focuses on the causes and consequences of financial stress and combines laboratory studies with (experimental) field studies.

He is also director of the Knowledge Centre Psychology and Economic Behaviour, which is a great example of how to effectively apply psychological and behavioural insights to societal questions. The aim of the Knowledge Centre is to promote choices that improve individual and societal wellbeing - especially in the context of financial decision making. Through the Knowledge Center he and his colleagues work together with governments and social organizations. They share knowledge through events and training and provide advice based on scientific behavioural insights.
