In the past two years, the project group Dynamic Assessment of Everyday Communication using Virtual Reality has worked on a proof-of-concept for an innovative diagnostic tool to assess the functional communication skills of people with aphasia. This tool uses Virtual Reality (VR) technology to vary the complexity of communication and analyze both verbal and non-verbal communication. This innovative tool offers new possibilities for language diagnostics.
On May 9, 2025, we would like to share the results of this project during our symposium 'Virtual Reality in Language Diagnostics and Therapy: The Future!?', which will take place at uu77 in Nijmegen. We will explore how VR can be more frequently used and integrated into language assessment and therapy, and what opportunities and obstacles exist. A wide range of projects will be discussed, highlighting the use of VR for people with language problems, particularly in clinical practice. The symposium will delve into the substantive and technical aspects of VR, especially for speakers with aphasia or language development disorders.
The symposium will provide an overview of the current application possibilities of VR within language pathology and, through interaction between presenters and visitors, clarify what stands in the way of broader application of VR. Please note that - except for two lectures - the working language of the symposium will be Dutch.
The cost for participation in the symposium (including lunch) is EUR 15 per person.
The symposium is explicitly open to all interested parties from the research and (clinical) field of language assessment and treatment, and the use of VR in this context, including VR software developers, speech and language therapists, neuropsychologists, and language researchers. Accreditation has been granted by ADAP with 5 points.
