Analytical Chemistry & Chemometrics

Department

The department of Analytical Chemistry & Chemometrics consists of the Analytical Chemistry & Chemometrics research group (AC&C) and the Life Science Trace Detection Laboratory (TDLab). The AC&C research group focuses on chemometrics. This is the discipline within chemistry that develops methods to extract relevant information from chemical data. This ranges from simple localisation of data to prediction of, for instance, concentrations or finding biologically interesting molecules in complex mixtures. Research of the TDLab focuses on experimental methods for reliable detection and quantification of volatile compounds in complex gas mixtures. The department is part of Institute of Molecules and Materials (IMM).

Below are the highlights of the Analytical Chemistry & Chemometrics group. View all News, , Projects, Staff, and Vacancies.

NWA-ORC grant project ExpACT: Exposome ACTions perspectives for a healthy air quality environment

TDLab is part of a consortium that has received a grant within the NWA-ORC programme. The focus of the project is on an increased exposure of citizens to potentially harmful air emissions of emerging chemical and biological substances.

Analytical Chemistry & Chemometrics

Research of the Analytical Chemistry & Chemometrics group is centered around two main research philosophies.

Methodological Chemometrics

(Further) development of chemometric methods to tackle new challenges in chemistry and beyond: methodological research on chemometrical techniques like global optimisation methods, and multivariate statistics.

Application Oriented Research

These chemometric methods are applied and validated for pioneering science in chemistry and biology. This encompasses for instance image processing and spectroscopic analysis (NIR, LC-MS/MS) for industrial and medical applications.

Life Science Trace Detection Laboratory

Research in the Trace Detection Laboratory (TDLab) focuses on reliable detection and quantification of volatile compounds in complex gas mixtures. TDLab develops and applies techniques and analytical methodologies using state-of-the-art laser-based spectroscopy and mass spectrometry for a wide range of gas concentrations.

Applications in Life Science Areas

  • Biomarkers detection
  • Monitoring for precision medicine, fruit storage and dairy farming
  • Air pollution monitoring, plasma diagnostics
