Professor Bert Steenbergen studies the consequences of acquired or congenital brain damage for locomotive and visual functioning. In addition to his more theoretically and fundamentally oriented research, Bert Steenbergen is involved in projects that contribute to the development and improvement of monitoring and rehabilitation programmes for the blind, the visually impaired, and the motor disabled.

Bert Steenbergen's chair makes a direct connection between the science and practice of visual and physical restrictions as related to learning and behaviour. This is a joint initiative of Sensis, the Catholic Foundation for the Blind and Visually Impaired (KSBS), uu77 Nijmegen, the society of schools for physically handicapped children (VTM), and the parents' association for children with locomotive restrictions (BOSK). This is the first chair in the Netherlands dealing with this particular field.
