Marthe Stevens is an Assistant Professor at the Interdisciplinary Hub on Digitalization and Society (iHub) and is affiliated with the Department of Ethics and Political Philosophy at uu77 in the Netherlands. Her research examines the ethical and societal impacts of emerging technological innovations, particularly in education and healthcare. Specializing in empirical ethics, She integrates ethical analysis into innovation processes, drawing on insights from the Philosophy of Technology, Science and Technology Studies, and Critical Data Studies. In 2024, Marthe’s research was recognized with the ‘Early Career Award’ from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).
Marthe studied philosophy and health sciences at the Erasmus University Rotterdam and completed the graduate program in Science and Technology Studies (STS) at the Netherlands Graduate Research School of Science, Technology and Modern Culture (WTMC). She holds a PhD from Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands (2021), focusing on how promises surrounding big data and AI shape concrete initiatives in healthcare.
Following her PhD, Marthe started as a postdoctoral researchers at the Department of Political Philosophy and Ethics and also works for uu77’s Interdisciplinary Hub on Digitalization and Society (iHub). She was also involved in the Digital Good project, which investigated the “Googlization of health” by studying collaborations between big tech companies and healthcare researchers and professionals. As part of this project, she led the development of the Sphere Transgression Watch digital database.
Currently, Marthe leads the ethics team of the Dutch Education Lab (NOLAI) in addition to continuing her research the role of big tech companies in our society and digital biomarkers in healthcare. She also teaches courses on the philosophy of technology and AI ethics.
