Advanced English course (B2) - Cambridge First

Do you already have a solid foundation and have you mastered English at B1 level, but would you like to have more in-depth conversations and be able to write detailed English texts? With our advanced course, you will become more confident in English and learn to communicate fluently in more complex situations.

    General

    In this course, you will deepen your knowledge of English and develop the skills you need to speak, write, read and listen effectively and with nuance at B2 level. Your will expand your vocabulary further and deepen your knowledge of grammar, paying extra attention to idioms and more complex sentence structures. This course will take you to the level you need to take part in the international job market and study programmes. The course is also ideal if you want to brush up on your English.

    After this English course, you will be able to:

    • Communicate fluently and spontaneously with speakers of any level and actively participate in discussions;
    • Give clear and detailed descriptions, express opinions on topical issues and give arguments for and against an issue;
    • Understand detailed instructions and explanations, as well as most TV programmes, films and radio broadcasts on familiar topics;
    • Read and understand articles, reports and literature that contain complex ideas or arguments, including specific vocabulary in different subject areas;
    • Write clear, detailed and well-structured texts on complex topics, with good structure and using connecting words. You can write formal and informal emails, letters, essays, reports, articles and reviews.

    This course takes place from 15 September 2025 until 12 January 2026. There is no class in the week of 13 October and 22 & 29 December because of the holidays.

    Group A 

    • Class day and times: Mondays from 6.00 - 8.00 pm.
    • Location: on campus in Nijmegen

    If a lesson is cancelled, it will be rescheduled in the week following the last lesson.

    Approach and content

    During classes, you will be fully immersed in English, and you can continue to develop your skills outside classes with our comprehensive teaching materials. You should count on about two to four hours of individual study per week. You will receive personal feedback from your teacher at multiple moments during the course.

    If you want to take the Cambridge First certificate exam, the course will give you useful tips and exercises to prepare for it.

    At the end of the course you will not only have raised your English to a higher level, but you will also be prepared for the : you will know exactly what to expect during the exam and how best to tackle the assignments. You can take a Cambridge exam at one of the British Council examination centres in the Netherlands. You will be assessed on four skills: Reading and use of English, writing, listening and speaking. 

    If you pass the exam, you will receive a certificate that will enhance your CV on an international level. This certificate is recognised in almost all countries and remains valid throughout your life. The exam costs are not included in the course fee. You can register for an exam through . You can also take this course if you do not want to take the exam.

    • RU staff Radboudumc: Free of charge (provided that they meet the necessary conditions for Language Policy Courses)

    Determine your level with a free test

    To determine your level, you will first have to take an online placement test (Oxford Online Placement Test, OOPT). An OOPT score between 60 and 80 or a Cambridge Preliminary certificate (score c or higher) is required to enrol in the English B2 course - Cambridge First.

    OOPT: more information and registration

    If you have successfully completed a course with us you will receive a certificate of Radboud in'to Languages stating your level. You can use this certificate to advance to the next level within a year without having to take the OOPT again.
