Study on lay justice in criminal cases published

Researchers from Conflict Resolution Institutions (COI) and Research Centre for State and Law (SteR) mapped the pros and cons of lay justice at the request of the Research and Data Centre (WODC).

Unlike almost all European countries, the Netherlands does not have lay justice, where citizens without legal training participate in the administration of justice. Following a motion in the Dutch House of Representatives, the already existing discussion on introducing lay justice in the Netherlands received a new impulse. In this study, advantages and disadvantages of different forms of lay justice were listed. In so doing, it examined experiences in other European countries.

The study, conducted by Anna Pivaty, Hannah Hübner, Elco Nab and Marijke Ter Voert, with contributions from Paul Bovend'Eert and Jordy Kaal, offers insights into three forms of lay justice and discusses experiences from other European countries.
