Column Jochem Tolsma: No regrets, but challenges

I started my job as vice dean (with a focus on) education on the 1st of February. After the first week had gone by, I texted my fellow board members: ‘I have regrets’. Thankfully I noticed my mistake quickly and corrected myself: ‘I have NO regrets'. I learned a valuable lesson; take your time to communicate properly. A few more weeks have passed and I still have NO regrets from taking on the role of vice dean. Quite the opposite, in fact.

These are challenging times for universities in the Netherlands. Our faculty too faces the challenging task of finding ways to cope with the budget cuts. It is almost self-evident to evaluate new educational initiatives —whether it's launching a new bachelor’s or master’s program or implementing a new assessment policy— against uu77’s educational vision and our faculty’s focus areas in education development. Let us please not lose sight of our vision and focus points when we are faced with financial cutbacks.

While the budget cuts may present challenges, they also bring new opportunities. There is momentum for change. For example, this is a chance to foster greater interdisciplinary collaboration within and between faculties. Let’s seize these opportunities. One of my priorities will be to promote and maintain a safe work and study environment, especially during these times. As vice dean, I want to focus on fostering social cohesion and building stronger connections within our faculty.

I got to meet a lot of new people from our faculty this month, but I still have not met everyone. Feel free to drop by (I can often be found in MM. 2.076).
