What if technology could help us to regain our speech or mobility when paralyzed? Or improve our concentration? Some so-called ‘neurotechnologies’ have the potential to do just that, and make us more capable and autonomous. But does implanting technology in our brains also come with risks to our autonomy? Who is in charge in a future where technology and our brains become more and more intertwined? Come listen to philosopher Giulio Mecacci and neuroscientist Anouck Schippers and discover what neurotechnology will do to our autonomy.

Risks and possibilities

Neurotechnology is a vast field, full of possibilities. From nudging to the more invasive deep brain stimulation, all kinds of techniques are quickly becoming available to enhance or repair human capability. The potential to enhance human autonomy is massive, but so are some of the risks. Are your thoughts and actions still exclusively yours when you are being assisted by a chip in your brain? What is the influence of the company that owns the technology in your head? And will neurotechnology eventually force us to rethink what autonomy means?

No longer science fiction

For some people, neurotechnology means the freedom to move, speak and live a more autonomous life. Helping paralyzed patients through techniques like deep brain stimulation, is no longer science fiction. But what does this technology actually do? Will neurotechnology eventually be able to cure al neurological diseases, or are there limits to what it can do?

Philosopher Giulio Mecacci and neuroscientist Anouck Schippers discuss what neurotechnology entails, and how it relates to human autonomy.

The program is in English.

About the speakers

Giulio Mecacci is a philosopher of mind and technology with an interest in the ethical, legal and societal implications of AI and neurotechnologies. He approaches those implications from the perspective of responsible innovation and value sensitive design.

is a neuroscientist at Utrecht University. She investigates whether patients would benefit from medical neuroscientific interventions, and visits the candidates at home to conduct training sessions.

Participation

This programme has been cancelled due to too few registrations.
However, you can still register for the programme Expert session ‘Collecting data, reading minds?’ organised by NeurotechEU.

“Collecting data: reading minds?”

This programme focuses on sharpening our view on neurotechnology: what opportunities and risks does neurotechnology bring, and can we expect neurotechnology to eventually gain access to our most intimate stream of thoughts?
