Graduation

Once you have fulfilled the requirements of your programme's curriculum, you will be able to graduate. You can then apply for your diploma and deregister from your study programme. You can choose to be deregistered from the first month after your examination date, or you can choose a later month or the end of the academic year. You do owe tuition fee for the months for which you remain enrolled.

Step 1

Applying for your diploma

You need to apply for your diploma through your faculty.

Step 2

Deregistering from your study programme

Once you have applied for your diploma, you can deregister from your study programme. This means that you will no longer have to pay tuition fees, but also that you will no longer be entitled to a student loan or a public transport pass.

Graduating in June, July or August

If you graduate in June, July or August, your registration will automatically expire on 31 August. You will not be required to take any action. Your tuition fees will also not be refunded.

If you are not sure whether you will be able to graduate in August, you will need to reregister. If you graduate in September, but your examination date falls in August, your reregistration will be retroactively cancelled.

Graduating in a different month

Direct deregistration

After you have applied for your diploma, you can deregister. If you graduate in a month other than June, July or August and you want to deregister, you must do so via Studielink. Request for deregistration as soon as you know when you will graduate. Choose as reason ‘graduation’. Please note that you have to apply for your diploma first before you deregister. The condition for graduation is that you have a valid enrolment.

Deregistering in a later month

After you have applied for your diploma, you can also deregister in a later month. This too must be done via Studielink. Choose ‘deregistration’ as the reason. You can then choose the month in which you want to deregister. This is not possible in June, July or August.

Staying registered during the academic year

After you have applied for your diploma, you can also choose to remain enrolled for the rest of the academic year. In that case, you do not have to take any action and you will be automatically deregistered on 31 August.

Examination date and deregistration date in case of direct deregistration

The examination date is the date on which you will officially graduate: this is the date that will also be shown on your diploma. If you apply for your diploma within four weeks (28 days) of the last result that you obtained, the date on which you obtained this final result will become your examination date. If you apply for your diploma at a later date, your examination date will be the same as the date on which you submit your request. A prerequisite is that you are still registered on this date. Your deregistration date is always the first date of the month following your examination date. The date of you graduation ceremony is irrelevant here.

Example: was your bachelor's thesis processed with a positive result in Osiris on 6 November with a test date of 30 October? Then 30 October counts as your exam date and 1 November is your deregistration date. Even if you do not apply for your degree until 6 November.

Exception Faculty of Science

The Faculty of Science has a set exam date each month. It is not possible to apply for a diploma with a date in the past.

Exception Nijmegen School of Management

If you do not apply for your diploma on time, your exam date will be set for the first day of the month in which you submitted the application.

Please note: You will no longer be entitled to a student loan or a public transport pass from the month after your examination date. Make sure that you cancel your student loan and your public transport pass on time. Find out more about the implications of deregistering from a study programme.

Step 3

Check the implications of deregistration

Deregistering from your programme has various consequences, including on your student finance, tuition fees and student travel product. It is important that you are aware of this, as it may have financial consequences.
